- The drilling season has begun! | AerWorx
< Back The drilling season has begun! THE AERWORX VIPER SERIES Last week The Viper DT21 Double Disc Drill was delivered to a happy customer in Wiltshire. A blend of peas, barley and oats was drilled for forage for their herd of Aberdeen Angus sucklers. Seeds were drilled alongside fertiliser using the split hopper and easy calibration process to set the seed: fertiliser rates. Their next drilling project is on their extensive grassland. This forward thinking family farm also have an Aerworx aerator that they have used to address any compactions issues with grassland and are now considering using this before drilling arable land to improve soil health for optimal yields whilst reducing the need for expensive fert! *Different sizes available with working widths up to 3m. Please contact us if you would like a demo or to know more. The split hopper enables seeds to be drilled alongside fertiliser. - What Is Compaction? | AerWorx
Why challenging weather patterns means combating compaction and aerating is more important than ever. What is Compaction? BACK TO AERATION The legacy of traditional farming methods Over the years we have expected soil to keep performing using traditional methods that merely “maintain and sustain”. These traditional methods often expose soil to erosion, cause evaporative losses, destroy humus releasing sequestered carbon and break down the soil structure and biology that has taken precious time to form. It is now thought that as much carbon is probably released by the same traditional processes that are trying to add carbon to the soil e.g. ploughing in manure. The repeated passes by heavy tractors and equipment lead to soil degeneration and to the formation of almost impenetrable layers of compact soil (“hard pan”) below the surface. Livestock grazing, combined with machinery, contributes to “hard pan” formation otherwise known as soil compaction... Soil is a living asset With the current pressures of fertiliser use, environmental concerns, water quality, general cost increases, and the consequences of challenging climate changes, the need to produce your final product as efficiently as possible whilst future proofing your soil has never been so important. The use of fertiliser and chemicals have historically been a large part of production in an attempt to compensate for poor soil health and poor production. Times are changing with a move towards the use of less synthetic applications and restoration of soil to it's living state - but if the soil isn’t in the correct conditions to absorb and retain any (natural) applicants, it’s irrelevant what you use or how accurately you spread them. You could spread agro chemicals or biostimulants accurately to the nearest gram/ha, but if the soil isn’t in the condition to make best use of it, run off or surface only penetration will result in a loss of productivity and money. Importantly. the same is true for water. Good efficient farming starts with the one thing we use to grow all our crops ... the soil! We need to think of the soil as a living asset that needs water, oxygen, biological organisms and warmth. Water infiltration restricted by compaction What is compaction? Compaction of the soil results in soil particle compression resulting in: large angular block like aggregates a closed structure rather than open and porous like a sponge limited water penetration reduction in oxygen entry a stressed crop whose roots can’t easily penetrate the “pan”. Organisms vital for soil health no longer reside causing a reduction in organic matter, poorly bound soil structure and limited nutrient availability. What does compaction result in? Significant run off - inability to capture and retain water Loss of topsoil and erosion Water logging and poaching with the associated livestock veterinary issues Reduced plant growth and DM yields Poor carbon capture High fertiliser/applicant costs that don’t always bring rewarding returns Reduced number of grazing days Struggles to address key policy drivers made by the government rewarding farmers for soil health, water quality and improved carbon footprints. It is not uncommon for a UK farm to be farming only the top 2" of soil ! With clear changes in our climate and the challenge that that presents for our soil, we need to consider soil health and tactical, cost effective approaches more than ever. AERATION IS AN IMPORTANT PART OF THAT REGENERATIVE PLAN How to assess soil compaction WHY AERATE?

Addressing vineyard and orchard compaction, using a no till approach, with the AerWorx aerator made to fit row widths of your choice. Vineyards & Orchards Anchor 1 Building in Vineyard & Orchard Resilience With the extremes in weather patterns, never has it been so important to weatherproof your vineyard. During wetter months, capturing and retaining water in the soils is vital to ensure that roots, whether those of vines or a cover crop, can tap in to this resource during hotter, drier months. If the soil is compacted, infiltration rates become very slow...the consequences are far reaching. Click here for more about compaction "There is a drought if there is no rain... there is a drought if you can't capture it" Compacted vineyard soil Soil health = vine health Soil health - the vital starting point Compacted vineyard soil 1/6 The repeated passes by vineyard tractors and equipment lead to soil degeneration and to the formation of almost impenetrable layers of compact soil (“hard pan”) below the surface. THE EFFECTS OF COMPACTION Reduced root health, vine growth & yields Water logging Loss of the vital soil microbiome Significant run off Loss of topsoil and erosion Poor carbon capture High applicant costs that don’t always bring rewarding returns Increased irrigation costs / water footprint Run off Waterlogging Soil erosion CLICK HERE FOR HOW AERWORX WORKS -THE SLOT & SHATTER EFFECT WHAT RESULTS CAN YOU EXPECT? - AerWorx and The Garlic Farm | AerWorx
< Back AerWorx and The Garlic Farm Earlier this month we had the pleasure of visiting the Isle of Wight again for a delivery of one of our AerWorx Aerators to Barney Barnett at the infamous Garlic Farm . Based in the stunning Arreton Valley the Garlic Farm is a long-established family business which has been running for over 60 years. The farm has diversified since it’s earlier days and now incorporates a farm shop, restaurant, and farm walks where customers are invited to submerge themselves in the full Garlic Farm experience. Using their immaculately kept lawns behind their restaurant they also hold charitable events, with a visit from Opera on the Move in aid of Mountbatten Isle Of Wight happening in June and July this year. A Garlic Farm may not be where you first think of when you start to plan your wedding, but you can also get married on their beautiful site! Barney and team at The Garlic Farm have been working with Neils Corfield to improve their soil health and structure, improve water retention which in return will increase their yields, reduce fertiliser costs and help working towards a more regenerative way of farming and this is where AerWorx became involved and an important part of the way they farm. We now have a complete range of AerWorx Aerators based on the Isle of Wight, should you be interested in finding out more information contact Jason on 07500 898387 or Dale on 07943 368927 .
