Alleviating compaction, whether grassland or arable, in order to restore soil health not only enables the physical entry of air and water, it provides the optimal environment for soil microbes - essential for plant health and soil structure. Who knew that something so tiny, could be so vital?
When we are faced with anaerobic compacted lifeless soil, we need to kick start its recovery in a sensitive but productive way:

Alleviate compaction, using a no till approach with minimal surface disturbance to make the soil more porous. Using the Slot & Shatter Effect of Aerworx aerators the soil is fractured and opened up down to 30 cm when used in the correct conditions. Little soil is exposed so soil carbon is retained and the soil food web minimally disturbed.

Make management changes such as maximising the efficiency of each vehicle pass; adopting grazing patterns that facilitate root health; use of deep root tapping plants in sward/ cover crop mixes.

Innoculate the soil with microbes that are naturally found in our soils, to aid the transition back to full soil health until microbes can then flourish and multiply.

Why are soil microbes important?
The “ trade agreement” between plant and microbes is a synergistic relationship whereby roots supply energy to the micro-organisms in the form of root exudates and the bacteria/ fungi efficiently provide accessible nutrients for the plant. This process has evolved over millions of years!
For example, the beneficial microbes:

Solubilise Phosphate reserves in the soil. Most soils have plenty of phosphate but it is unavailable to the plant unless certain microbes are present. e.g. enzymes produced by the microorganisms break P bonds between Al, Ca, and Fe, resulting in a plant accessible form of P.

Increase Nitrogen fixation in the rhizosphere.

Improves Potassium availability

Protects roots from disease

Produce "glues" and hyphae to create and bind healthy soil aggregates

Microbz soil is a liquid probiotic concentrate made from naturally derived microbes fermented with fungi.
It contains an impressive consortium of :
Purified water, lactobacilli, yeasts and photosynthestic microbes, sugar cane molasses, sea water concentrate, humic and fulvic acid, mycrorrhizal fungi and trichoderma fungi, seaweed extract, algae, rock dust.

In our recent Grassland Trial, Microbz, when used on soil that had been de-compacted with AerWorx, was one of the highest performing products. Grassland recovery and productivity after the winter months, through the drought of 2026 and over the entire grassland year, showed superior performance compared to the untreated control strip and other products.
